We are currently running a consultation on the official adoption of a Local Validation List.
Planning
Our planning department receives and decides on planning applications. We also offer pre-application advice for anyone interested in making an application. From April 1, this service will be chargeable.
Applications
You can view and comment on planning applications under consideration, and see a history of decisions made.
Permission
Planning applications can be made online. This page also has guidance on whether you need planning permission, including for householder developments, commercial developments, advertising and signage.
Advice
We offer guidance before you make your planning application. Further information is also available on proposals for major developments.
Appeals
If we refuse your planning permission, you have the right of appeal.
Planning Panel
Major planning decisions are made in public by our Planning Panel, made up of 11 of our councillors.
Planning Policy
The Planning Policy team produces land use policies and guidance that are used in deciding planning applications and guiding future development in the borough.
Enforcement complaints
To complain about development that you think does not have planning permission, or breaks the conditions of its permission, fill in this form.

Nutrient neutrality
On March 16, 2022, we received a nutrient neutrality notification from Natural England in relation to the River Derwent and Bassenthwaite Lake Special Area of Conservation.
In the catchment area of this protected site, certain types of new development, such as housing, have the potential to cause adverse impacts through nutrient pollution.
