EGREMONT is to see several areas along its main street spruced up under a new scheme.
Copeland Borough Council, working with Egremont Town Council, is commissioning upgrades including new benches and planters, and the refurbishment of some existing street furniture.
The improvements have been funded by the council, Sellafield Ltd, and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. There was also an enabling grant from Copeland Community Fund to support the initial designs.
Elected Mayor of Copeland, Mike Starkie, said: “We’re delighted to announce this work in Egremont. The town has always been attractive, and these improvements should make it an even more pleasant place for locals and visitors to spend time.”
The work will include new street furniture and the refurbishment of existing furniture in three key areas:
- Ehen Court Road
- the area adjacent to the West Lakes Academy entrance
- behind the De Lucy Centre.
The items will be maintained by Egremont Town Council.
Egremont Town Council Chairperson, Elaine Woodburn, said: "The town council is pleased to work in partnership to secure these improvements to our town centre. Sometimes we underestimate the impact of visible improvements and how welcoming they make the town for visitors, business and residents.
"As well as maintaining the furniture, the town council is donating a new bench outside the Meeting Place to remember those lost to, and affected by, the Covid pandemic. Egremont is visibly in need of support and we hope that with these improvements, and other funding through the Borderlands programme, the town can turn an economic corner."
Gary McKeating, Head of Development and Community at Sellafield Ltd, added: “Having pride and a sense of place in where we live and work is really important. This funding, through the Sellafield Ltd social impact multiplied programme, will help deliver on that agenda .”
The project is due to begin in spring.
