Great big moves towards a greener Copeland

Published: 20/09/2022

Sustainable living will be front and centre in Copeland for Great Big Green Week.

From affordable vegetable boxes, to a volunteering opportunity at Distington Walled Garden, Copeland Borough Council is holding events to promote sustainability.

Great Big Green Week, which runs from September 24 until October 2, encourages and funds organisations to run community action projects, and raise awareness of climate change.

During the week, the council will host three events:

On September 28, from 10am until noon, vegetable boxes will be sold outside The Beacon Museum in Whitehaven. Each £2.50 box contains the ingredients for vegetable soup, a recipe, seeds to grow vegetables, and information on climate change.
Also on September 28, from 2pm until 4pm, there will be a ‘Tea and Chat’ event in Distington Walled Garden. Visitors can enjoy a cream tea, buy a vegetable box and browse craft stalls.
On October 1 there will be a volunteer gardening session at Distington Walled Garden. The event runs from 10am until 1pm and anyone can come along and help with a gardening task. No experience is needed.
The council’s Social Prescribing team will be there to offer free wellbeing advice and signpost volunteers to other organisations. The vegetable boxes will also be on sale at this event. The vegetable boxes will also be on sale at this event, alongside homemade soup, and bread.

Councillor Andy Pratt, Copeland’s Portfolio Holder for Parks and Open Spaces, said: “It’s great that we can use this opportunity to promote sustainable living.

“It falls in line with Copeland’s Climate Action Plan, which puts sustainability at the heart of all our projects.”
