Council runs popular course to boost job prospects

Published: 07/12/2021

COPELAND Council has once again offered unemployed people the chance to find out more about job opportunities in the video gaming industry.

The course, which explains what it is like to work in the sector and what opportunities are available, was first offered back in June 2020. It proved so popular, it has been run again.

The Copeland Work and Skills Partnership, led by Copeland Borough Council, organised the online session with games programming company BetaJester Ltd.

It helped participants understand the different roles in the gaming industry, and the skills required to do the jobs.

Roles such as artist, designer, programmer and sound designer were covered, as well as that of quality assurance officer, marketing professional, content creator and performer.

Mayor of Copeland, Mike Starkie, said: "We continue to try to improve the level of digital skills in Copeland, and providing ways to advance people's careers is an absolute priority for us. These Work Academies are the perfect chance for unemployed people to look into different careers and embrace the opportunities they offer.

"I hope this course, which we have run twice now, helps some people on their way to a successful job."

Lynne Purbrick, Whitehaven Jobcentre Customer Service Manager, said: "Our customers really enjoyed finding out about the gaming industry.

"They heard from Adam Boyne, a director at Betajester Ltd, about all the different roles available, and what it's actually like to work in this field."

The programme is the latest in a series arranged by the Copeland Work and Skills Partnership, which is funded by Copeland Community Fund and Sellafield Ltd.
