Popular market moves to The Rum Story

Published: 04/10/2021

A POPULAR Whitehaven market will move indoors on Saturday (October 9) to The Rum Story.

The Young Entrepreneurs Market, run by Copeland Borough Council, has traditionally been held on King Street, Whitehaven.

It will now move indoors to shield stall holders and visitors from the Cumbrian winter weather and partner with the Whitehaven town centre tourist attraction.

Jenny Brumby, Copeland Council’s Business Liaison Officer, said: “Our Young Entrepreneurs Market has been a huge success so far and we want to ensure that stall holders and visitors continue to enjoy the monthly event by providing a great experience for them.

“The weather in Copeland can often be unpredictable and we don’t want anyone to be put off by the cold and rain, and not get the chance to come and support our young people.

“We’re incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to work with The Rum Story and it will be fantastic to see our young people selling their modern wares against a backdrop of the town’s famous Rum trade from years gone by.

“Our young people are making real strides in their businesses and have benefited from our mentorship programme recently. They had the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals who provided valuable business insight, experience, encouragement and moral support.

“They’re putting all they’ve learned into practice and are offering top quality local products including homemade candles, crafts, cakes, clothing, skincare, gifts and jewellery.

“We’d urge everyone to come along and support Copeland’s young people.”

John Baker, CEO at Whitehaven Harbour Commission, which owns The Rum Story attraction in Whitehaven, said: “We are delighted to work alongside Copeland Council to welcome the young entrepreneurs to The Rum Story, where the Courtyard here provides a unique and intimate setting.

“The market really is a wonderful showcase for these young people’s talents and we look forward to welcoming everyone along to enjoy and experience this exciting initiative.”

Copeland Borough Council’s Young Entrepreneurs Markets are sponsored by Stainless Metalcraft (Chatteris) Ltd.

Martin Lawrence, Commercial Director for Metalcraft said: "we were really inspired by Jenny’s passion and drive to make the Young Entrepreneurs Market a success and it’s no surprise that it has taken off so well.

"Metalcraft are pleased to not only be providing financial support but we’re looking forward to the mentoring and coaching elements which we’ll be starting in the next few months.

"This project builds on the Community Fund which we launched in Cumbria in 2019, and as a business it is really important that we make a contribution within the communities that Metalcraft operate."

The market will feature 20 young stall holders alongside live music from local young artists and storytelling for children.

The Young Entrepreneurs Market will be held at The Rum Story in Whitehaven on October 9, from 10am to 2pm.
