RESIDENTS are invited to a plaque unveiling in Whitehaven to commemorate VJ Day.
Councillor Allan Forster, Copeland Council's Armed Forces Champion, is leading the arrangements for the event to honour the armed forces community past and present.
The event will take place on Sunday, August 15 at St Nicholas’ Church, Whitehaven. The service will start at 1pm, led by Reverend Robert Jackson, and will be followed by refreshments.
The plaque has been supported by a contribution from Whitehaven Town Council.
Coun Allan Forster said: "Victory over Japan Day is the day on which Imperial Japan surrendered in World War II, in effect bringing the war to an end.
“The sacrifice that was made by the people of Copeland was great, with thousands of troops being involved in this conflict, and we all need to remember their commitment and raise the profile of VJ day, which is often forgotten and overshadowed by VE day earlier in the year.”
Mike Starkie, Mayor of Copeland, added: "The service will bring the community together and has the full support of Copeland Council.
"I'd like to congratulate Councillor Forster on all his hard work in organising the event so far, and I look forward to attending to the unveiling of the plaque to commemorate the end of the war in the Far East."
The event will be run in-line with Government Covid-19 guidance. To find out more about the event, contact Councillor Forster 07767 434561.
