COPELAND Council is improving a green area created to commemorate fathers.
As Fathers’ Day approaches, Covid-19 restrictions mean the council is unable to hold any kind of service in honour of those dads who have passed away.
Instead, the area at Distington Hall Crematorium is to be planted with two new trees, and a flower border to define the area. The piece of land is adjacent to the car park and has a plaque to mark that it is there in memory of fathers. Family members often leave flowers at the spot or use it for a few moments’ contemplation.
The two new trees are, like the existing one, white-berried rowans. They have pale pink blossoms in spring and clusters of white berries which last into winter.
A herbaceous border will also be planted to define and improve the area, but this will be done later in the year.
Copeland's Elected Mayor, Mike Starkie, said: “We’ve had a memorial area for mothers at the crematorium for several years. Around two years ago we created this small area where people can come to remember those fathers who have died.
“It’s sad we can’t hold services to remember parents this year, as we’ve done in the past, but people are welcome to lay flowers here and reflect for a while.
“And hopefully by the time Fathers’ Day comes round again, we can enjoy additional attractive trees and planted areas.”
