Work starts on sports pitch upgrade

Published: 09/04/2021

WORK has started on a major upgrade of the sports pitch at Cleator Moor Activity Centre.

A new 3G pitch is being installed at the centre, in addition to improved fencing and lighting, and work will be complete before the facility reopens in early July.

The £350,000 project is being funded from the £500,000 accelerated Towns Fund grant Copeland Council and Cleator Moor Town Fund Board successfully secured for Cleator Moor last year.

The facility is run by GLL on Copeland Council’s behalf and the pitch is being installed by Maryport-based SIS Pitches.

Derek Jones, GLL Partnerships Manager, said: “We are delighted to be working with our partners Copeland Borough Council on this project.

“The new 3G pitch will provide more of the local community with the opportunity to become engaged in sport, physical activity and play.

“We have already had a lot of interest in the pitch, which can only grow as me move towards opening in July.”

Kayleigh Daniels, Chair of the Cleator Moor Towns Fund Board, said: “The pitch has been a much-valued asset to the town for many years, and it’s fantastic that this major upgrade will ensure that it will continue to be enjoyed by the community for many years to come.”

The accelerated funding has been awarded to Cleator Moor while the main Towns Fund bid was being developed; the outcome of which is expected to be known next month. The remainder of the funding has been used for cycleway improvements (work now complete) and an upgrade of the Jacktrees Road play area (work under way).
