COPELAND Council has partnered with Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners to revitalise the picturesque harbourside.
The new approach will see the Council’s Parks and Open Spaces team support the harbourside maintenance team in sprucing up the area.
Horticultural work at the north end of the harbour promenade has commenced, tackling the overgrowth around the Queens Dock car park.
Tree surveying, planting, the replacement of block paving setts and general maintenance is set to begin shortly, and the organisations are asking residents and visitors to keep the area free from litter.
Emanuel Flecken, Open Spaces Manager, Copeland Borough Council, said: “Our team is looking forward to getting to work and supporting the ongoing efforts to improve the harbour environment.
“The harbourside is a fantastic place to take a scenic stroll and we’re delighted that we can extend the maintenance work we do in the town, out onto the coast.
“The area is well used by locals and visitors alike and we want to play our part in making it clean, safe and attractive to those who choose to enjoy the picturesque views.
“The public also has a vital role to play in keeping the area safe, clean and tidy, and it is important that people act responsibly and dispose of litter and dog waste appropriately, so that the harbourside can be enjoyed by everyone.”
Keith Shackley, Whitehaven Harbour Operations Manager, Whitehaven Harbour Commissioners, said: “We are very pleased to have set up a working group in which the local councils and the Commissioners can work collaboratively for the benefit of the community.
“We look forward to the council teams working with us and alongside our own maintenance contractors so that together we can make the town and the harbour a much more attractive place to visit.”
