The Beacon Museum and Portal to close temporarily

Published: 03/11/2020

THE Beacon Museum and Portal in Whitehaven will close their doors on Thursday in line with new Government guidance.

The museum will use the four-week closure period to work on the ongoing Beacon Sparks digitisation project and carry out essential maintenance. The museum’s popular outreach programme with schools will continue.

Steven Brown, Copeland Council’s Director of Financial Resources, said: “We have been delighted with the level of support we have received from the public since we reopened in August, and a great deal of work has gone into making our visitor experience safe, while remaining informative and enjoyable, for our guests. We will continue to improve our attraction during this enforced closure, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back as soon as the restrictions allow.”

The museum was recently awarded £252,000 by central Government as part of its £1.57 billion Culture Recovery Fund.

Additionally, the Beacon Sparks project that will progress during the period of closure is bringing the museum to life through a series of digital interactives.

The project aims to revitalise the visualisation of local history with subjects including history, art and science transformed for visitors to learn and enjoy.
