Plans amended for VJ Day celebrations

Published: 22/07/2020

A SERIES of small-scale events will take place for care home residents across Copeland to mark VJ Day next month.

A large parade and gathering that had been planned for Whitehaven for Saturday, August 15 – on the 75th anniversary of VJ Day – has been cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Event organiser Councillor Allan Forster – Copeland Council’s Armed Forces Champion – has instead organised a number of visits to care homes so residents can enjoy some refreshments and live music in their own gardens.

Councillor Forster said: “It is disappointing that we have been forced to cancel the parade through town and the music and events in St Nicholas’ Gardens, as a lot of people had put a lot of time and effort into organising it. I’d like to thank everyone who has worked with me on these plans, and it’s unfortunate that the day cannot happen as planned.

“However, we have adapted our plans and are pleased to be going on a tour around our care homes on August 15, offering some live music and refreshments – at a safe distance - to help residents mark the anniversary.

“A number of care homes have already registered their interest in welcoming us on the day, and we look forward to visiting. If any homes have not yet contacted us and would like to be involved, then please get in touch. We’d be happy to include you on our schedule.”

To enquire about receiving a visit, lasting approximately one hour, care home managers are asked to telephone Councillor Forster on 07767 434561.
