COPELAND Council is supporting a new service for the over-55s.
The Copeland Age and Advice Service (CAAS) is a Community Interest Company set up to offer guidance around financial issues, applying for grants, housing, benefits and other issues to support independent living.
It also offers advice on blue badges, benefits checks and Lasting Power of Attorney applications.
Copeland Council has an officer co-opted onto on the board of the new company, and this week Mayor Mike Starkie spoke at the launch of the service. CAAS has been set up by Becky Goddard and Lesley Amor, employs five staff and also has volunteers supporting the service.
Mayor Starkie said: "It is always fantastic news to be able to support a new service for our residents. We know that people in this age group often find it difficult to source trustworthy advice on these matters and so it's great news to see the work this not-for-profit organisation plan to do."
CAAS, based in Gregg's Lane in Whitehaven, helps the over-55s to:
support themselves and manage financially, apply for benefits, understand and access relevant housing options and live independently through assessment for aids and adaptations.
Residents can be referred to CAAS, for example by a GP or social worker, or simply contact the organisation themselves. There is a charge for services.
The launch of CAAS was at Cleator Moor Civic Hall on Monday October 21.
