HOUSEHOLDERS in Copeland are being urged to ensure that their bulky waste is being disposed of by an appropriately licensed collector.
The reminder from Copeland Council and the Environment Agency comes after a number of incidents whereby items have been dumped by alleged disposal firms or individuals, leaving the householder liable for a fixed penalty fine, or facing a court case and a hefty fine for fly-tipping.
Householders are asked to make the following checks before paying someone to take their bulky waste away:

Ask to see their waste carriers licence and the permit number for the waste facility they intend to use

Ask them for their business address and telephone number

Record the vehicle description and registration number

Councillor Steve Morgan, Portfolio Holder for Waste Collection, said: “It’s important that residents know that they are legally responsible for ensuring their waste is disposed of correctly – even when they pass it on to a third party for disposal.
“We have had cases where someone has found themselves being investigated for fly-tipping because they used someone they saw advertised on social media, who took cash to pick up their items and simply dumped them elsewhere.
“Please be suspicious of people who offer a quote that appears too good to be true, and those who insist on cash or won’t provide a receipt.
“There are a number of very reputable firms offering this service in Copeland – including ourselves as a borough council - and we are urging householders to ensure they use these legitimate channels. Legitimate collectors won’t be offended being asked for their credentials, they expect to be asked.”
