Council to support private landlords in Copeland

Published: 20/06/2019

COPELAND Council is offering a wealth of information and guidance to private landlords who have properties in the borough.

A dedicated Private Landlords’ Forum will be held on June 26 at 1pm until around 2.30pm, at the Copeland Centre, Whitehaven.

Staff from Copeland Borough Council and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will be covering topics including changes in legislation and shifts in the payment process in relation to Universal Credit.

Copeland Council staff will be discussing the Council’s Landlords’ Incentive Scheme where the Housing team can offer rent deposits and guarantees.

Advice and guidance will be given around Local Housing Allowance, processes of eviction, explicit consent, dual housing payments, floating support and Discretionary Housing Payments.

A presentation on housing standards and the requirements of private landlords will be offered by specialist officers.

Councillor Mike McVeigh, Portfolio Holder for Strategic Housing, said: “I’d urge all private landlords to attend this specialist forum designed specifically for them by incredibly knowledgeable officers of the council.

“Becoming a landlord may be daunting for some as there are many rules and regulations and it is vitally important that landlords understand their responsibilities.

“We would also encourage those with empty homes in the borough to use this opportunity and our advice to move towards occupying their property.”

Landlords are not required to pre-register for the event. For further information contact Gemma Coward, Housing Options Team Leader, at gemma.coward@copeland.gov.uk or on 01946 598431.
