COPELAND Council is driving forward its tourism agenda with the recruitment of two members of staff dedicated to attracting more visitors to the borough.
The council is currently advertising for two newly-created posts - a Tourism Sector Development Officer and a Coastal Programme Officer - to develop the tourism offer in the borough.
The Tourism Sector Development Officer will work with the private and public sector, as well as community partners, to develop new products, activities and attractions in the borough to increase visitor numbers.
The officer will also work closely with Cumbria Tourism and local tourism businesses to build on existing initiatives to support the development of skills, business start-ups and investment in the sector.
The Coastal Programme Officer will develop and deliver the projects for the Connecting Cumbria’s Hidden Coast scheme. Stretching along an unbroken 40-mile trail from Whitehaven to Millom, the coastal challenge route will feature adrenalin activities, cycling facilities and art installations at various intervals.
Copeland Council owns the Beacon Museum and Portal on Whitehaven’s harbourside, which is a cornerstone for tourism visitors. Last month, the council also opened the Copeland Visitor Information Point, located on the museum’s ground floor.
Mike Starkie, Mayor of Copeland, said: “Boosting Copeland’s share of the income generated by tourism is a key priority for Copeland Council, and the recruitment of two new members of staff dedicated to developing the sector is a major step towards this.
“The tourism offer in Copeland is excellent – from the natural beauty to outstanding attractions, accommodation and hospitality – and these new roles help us capitalise on this to attract more visitors to our borough.
“We extend our thanks to our partners, including Cumbria Tourism and Sellafield Ltd, for supporting our ambitions.”
