Community joins forces for clean-up

Published: 19/03/2019

A CHURCH grounds has received a spruce up thanks to a community litter-pick.

A host of organisations joined forces to tidy the grounds of St John’s Church, Cleator Moor, and the surrounding area.

The event was organised for the pupils of the Energy Coast UTC, at Lillyhall, as part of the Future Pathways programme run by Copeland Hub.

Joining the pupils were volunteers from Cumbria Constabulary, Copeland Borough Council and Home Group, while a free lunch was provided by the neighbouring Co-op.

Dozens of bags were collected during the session.

Cherry Akred, the Student Mentoring and Safeguarding Officer at the UTC, said:  “The Future Pathways programme fits well with the students as it helps to set them up with the skills they will need moving forward in to Year 11 - their GCSE year - and beyond.

“I especially love how the programme lets the students think about their community and what they have to offer it. The community projects they have decided on are always so worthwhile. They take a lot of pride in them. “

Harold Blair, a Church Warden and Chair of the Crossfield Community Centre Committee, added: “I’d like to thank everyone for their tremendous work. It’s been a delight to see these young people working so hard for the benefit of their community.”

Future Pathways is funded by Morgan Sindall Infrastructure and the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Office.
