Whitehaven gardens to receive a makeover

Published: 01/10/2018

A PROMINENT Whitehaven garden will receive a significant makeover thanks to a newly-formed partnership.

Whitehaven Town Council, Copeland Borough Council and the Parish of Whitehaven Church Council have formed the St Nicholas’ Gardens Working Group that will see an initial £10,000 spent on improving the much-loved Whitehaven town centre gardens.

The work that will begin this month will see the removal of summer plants to be replaced by new plants to provide colourful spring displays. Flower beds at the side and front of St Nicholas’ Centre will also be refurbished, and summer flower displays are already being developed for next year.

It is hoped that following the initial spend this year, the partnership will continue long-term and additional funders will support the partnership to increase the level of work it can carry out.

Representatives of all three partners gathered in St Nicholas’ Gardens on Monday to formally launch the partnership.

Mike Starkie, Mayor of Copeland, said: “St Nicholas’ Gardens is one of the jewels in Whitehaven’s crown and we are delighted to be part of this proactive partnership to give it the care and attention it deserves.”

Brian O’Kane, who represents Whitehaven Town Council on the Working Group, said: “I am delighted that the future of an essential area of our town is to be the focus of a real partnership to return the beauty and tranquility to a central area of our town.

“Deepest gratitude must be expressed to those who volunteered this year to help in our time of need, when the Town Council struggled with the complexities of archaic legislation.”

Rev Robert Jackson, of the Parish of Whitehaven Church Council, said: “I am thrilled that this new partnership has been formed, and I am extremely grateful to everyone who has worked to bring this about.

“The Church Council looks forward to playing its part in establishing St Nicholas' Gardens as a place of beauty and peace for all of our community and visitors to enjoy.”
