Successful cycling event held

Published: 17/09/2018

AN inclusive cycling event held in Whitehaven has been hailed as a major success.

School pupils from Mayfield, Bransty and Frizington enjoyed the Wheels For All event, held at Copeland Stadium, where they were able to try a wide range of adapted cycles. Also taking part were members of staff from Age UK West Cumbria.

The event was organised by Cycling Projects, in conjunction with Copeland Council and GLL, and it is now hoped that it can become a regular activity in Copeland.

Ian Tierney, from Cycling Projects, said: “We had over 40 people attend the event and everyone went away with a smile and an appetite for wanting more cycling at the arena.

“The feedback was very positive with several parents attending and stating how they have been wanting a service like this for their children in their local community.

“We want to keep this momentum going as there is definitely a need for the service. The aim would be to establish a regular weekly Wheels for All service for the communities of Copeland, so that people of all abilities can enjoy the benefits of cycling on their terms.”

Mike Starkie, Mayor of Copeland, attended the event. He said: “I’m pleased that the event was such a success. There should be no barriers to accessing physical activity and Copeland Council was proud to support the event, and we look forward to seeing how it progresses.”

Peter Johnstone, Chair of the GLL Copeland Leisure Board, added: “GLL have already developed a strong partnership with Cycle Projects through other partnerships, and we would be keen to see this replicated and developed in Copeland, providing a much needed service for members of the community who would otherwise not be able to access cycling.”
