PUBS in Copeland have raised a glass to a £108,000 discount on their business rates.
One hundred per cent of the 54 pubs that were eligible for the relief have now claimed their £2,000 discount through Copeland Borough Council.
The £1,000 discount on a pub’s National Non-Domestic Rates (business rates) was initially effective from April 1, 2017, to March 31, 2018. This has been extended and an additional £1,000 discount has been awarded to eligible pubs from April 1, 2018 to March 31, 2019.
Councillor Mark Holliday, Portfolio Holder for Revenues and Benefits, said: “This scheme has offered very welcome support to businesses in our borough.
“Especially in rural areas, pubs are the centre of their community and hubs for people to meet and socialise. I’m delighted that we are able to support this scheme.”
The discount has been rolled out locally under the Government’s Support for Pubs Scheme. To be eligible for the discount, pubs must be open, allow free entry (apart from on special events), and allow the sale of drinks (without food) at a bar. Their rateable value must also be less than £100,000.
