Green waste collections restart

Published: 13/03/2018

AS SPRING approaches, Copeland Council is about to restart its garden waste collection service.

The service, suspended during the winter months, will begin again in the week beginning Monday March 19.

The fortnightly collections are for grass, leaves, clippings and small branches. Residents can get a full list of what can and can’t be put in their garden bin at www.copeland.gov.uk. They will also find their waste collection calendar there, telling them what date their collection is due on.

Copeland's garden waste material is sent to a local composting firm.

Coun Mark Holliday, Copeland’s portfolio holder for customers and communities, said: “Gardeners who do not have the need or room to compost at home can do the next best thing by putting it our for collection in their brown bin.

"It's important though to only put garden waste in. If a bin is contaminated by other materials - for example rubble, plant pots or even household waste - it can't be composted and sometimes the entire load goes to waste."

Residents can find out about home composting and discounted food digesters at www.copeland.gov.uk.
