COPELAND residents are being encouraged to do their bit for the environment by recycling all their festive packaging this Christmas.
Copeland Council is continuing to operate its kerbside recycling service throughout the festive period. And for the extra waste that cannot fit into residents’ black boxes (currently for glass, paper and tins/cans), the council operates over 30 recycling sites across the borough.
A list of what items can and cannot be recycled at each site is available at www.copeland.gov.uk.
Councillor Mark Holliday, Portfolio Holder for Waste, said: “We know that Christmas is a peak time for our ‘bring’ sites as people rush to get rid of their unwanted packaging.
“As a result, we have taken the step of hiring an extra loader vehicle to cope with emptying the large full banks.
“We ask, however, that people ensure they put the right material in the right container, and help us get as many items in a bank as possible by flattening their cardboard and squashing their plastic bottles.
“We also ask that people are considerate to local residents and avoid using recycling sites at night.
“We appreciate that the banks are likely to be extremely well used over the coming weeks, and we ask that people should report a full bank to us on 01946 598300 or info@copeland.gov.uk, and we’ll endeavour to empty it as quickly as we can. We remind people, however, that if a bank is overflowing, please don’t place waste on the ground next to it as it can blow away and create a mess in that area.
“We suggest that if the bank you’re taking your recycling to is too full, please try one of our other sites.”
Residents are reminded that most plastic items – including food trays, yoghurt pots and plastic tubs – can be accepted in the appropriate recycling bank, and foil trays and aluminium foil can go in with tins/cans in a residents’ black box.
Household waste and recycling collections are operating two days later than usual during Christmas week, and one day later during New Year week.
