FOUR Copeland residents have secured jobs in the care industry thanks to an employability project.
Lakeland Carers and St George's Residential Home, based in Millom, have been working with Copeland Borough Council, Millom Network Centre and the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) to deliver a sector-based work academy to recruit employees for their businesses.
Two of the graduates have already started work and a further two will start in the new year.
Targeting residents from the Millom area who are struggling to access employment, the academy included skills training tailored for the care industry, mock interviews and work experience. All eight who took part in the scheme, delivered by the Copeland Work and Skills Partnership, were guaranteed job interviews. The candidates had been referred by the DWP.
Mike Starkie, Mayor of Copeland, said: "Staff from Lakeland Carers and St George's helped shape the programme which has prepared the candidates for the work environment.
"Through the programme, they acquired knowledge and skills that will be crucial to them in the care industry, including treating people with dignity and care, working with vulnerable people, equality and diversity, and safeguarding.
"This is another excellent programme delivered by the Copeland Work and Skills Partnership, which Copeland Council is proud to lead, and I am delighted that half of those who took part have already secured employment as a result."
The Copeland Work and Skills Partnership is led by Copeland Council and its programme of activities is funded by Copeland Community Fund. Other partners involved are: Citizens Advice Bureau, Cumbria County Council, Cumbria Council for Voluntary Service, DWP, Gen2, Groundwork North East and Cumbria, Home to Work/Works 4 You, Howgill Children's and Family Centre, Impact Housing, Inspira, Lakes College, Millom Network Centre, Phoenix Enterprise Centre and West Cumbria Works.
