THE Beacon museum has been shortlisted for a prestigious tourism award.
The Whitehaven harbourside attraction has been shortlisted in the 'Visitor Attraction of the Year' category in the Cumbria Tourism Awards.
The nomination comes on the back of a highly successful year for the museum, in which visitor numbers have increased by 24 per cent, with over 24,000 through its doors.
Elizabeth Kwasnik, museum manager, said: "We are delighted to be shortlisted as a finalist for these awards. Copeland should be proud of this museum and how it continues to move forward.
"This recognition adds to what visitors are already telling us. We hear frequently about how visitors love the new exhibitions and upgraded events. We get excited about innovating and change, so that we remain relevant both for locals and for tourists."
The museum is owned by Copeland Council. Mark Holliday, portfolio holder for customers and communities, said: "The Beacon reflects its name as a shining light and focal point for Whitehaven.
"The wide array of arts and exhibitions shown in the building appeal to all ages and genders. Congratulations to every member of the team who have worked hard to earn this nomination."
The nomination coincides with the return of the Copeland Pass, which entitles those who live in the borough to visit The Beacon for free during certain times of the year. The pass is currently applicable until July 7, allowing visitors to enjoy the current exhibits including Black Sheep: the Darker Side of Felt (which runs until June 29), and Hero or Villain: Mythbusting Piracy (until July 2).
