Copeland volunteers spread Heritage word
Wednesday 3 June 2015. For immediate release
A PROJECT to log the condition of listed buildings has been a resounding success thanks to volunteers from Copeland.
People who assessed Grade II listed buildings back in 2013 have been called on to pass their skills to volunteers in Allerdale, so that they can carry out a similar project there.
The Heritage at Risk Pilot survey was undertaken by Copeland volunteers on behalf of Copeland Borough Council. Their enthusiasm led to a second survey of Grade ll listed buildings, and now they’ve been helping the Allerdale volunteers.
Fifty Allerdale people were trained to assess the state of 300 buildings in Cockermouth, Maryport and Workington. The North of England Civic Trust led the project, which was funded by Historic England and supported by Allerdale Borough Council. The work will show exactly which buildings are in what state and feed into policies for their preservation.
Grade II listed buildings make up about 93 per cent of listed buildings and can be anything from a phone box or a milestone to a grand building. The volunteers had to look at the condition of walls, roofs, windows, gutters, and also try to assess whether the property was occupied.
The Copeland volunteers are also participating in the Baseline Condition Survey of Places of Worship which is organised by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) Maintenance Co-operatives Project.
