WITH only one month left until the elections, Copeland Borough Council and Copeland Youth Forums have teamed up with UCLan and the Samuel Lindow Foundation in a bid to get more young people engaged in democracy.
Copeland Borough Council and Copeland Youth Forums are inviting young people from across the borough to attend debates between mayoral candidates, and to get involved and ask questions of the candidates directly.
This exciting event is an opportunity to introduce the concept of an elected mayor and the differences that this role has from the previous system. As well as providing information, this event also highlights the fact that young people have less access to representation when unable to vote, and offers a unique opportunity to have their voice heard. Also, this event will give Copeland Borough Council and Copeland Youth Forums the chance to gather information relevant to young people in Copeland.
Elaine Woodburn, Leader of Copeland Borough Council said: “This fantastic event offers a unique opportunity to the area. It has the potential to engage more young people in the democratic process, which is an exciting prospect and something we hope young people will embrace.”
David Moore, Opposition Leader for Copeland Borough Council said: “With the upcoming mayoral election, Copeland have an exciting opportunity to get young people involved in the democratic process in an interactive, public manner. This event offers young people a great opportunity to ask the questions and encourage engagement in local politics.”
The Question Time style event will be held on Friday 10th April at the Samuel Lindow Building, West Lakes Science and Technology Park, Moor Row, CA24 3JY, from 12pm – 3pm.
